Breathe

Updated: Sep 4, 2021

In our fast-paced world, pausing regularly to breathe is making a comeback. We have finally recognized the value of the breath. So, I want to invite you to take a few long deep breaths.

Notice how you feel afterward. Are you a little calmer? Good! Then add it into your soul care practice. Soul care is a spiritual practice where we allow God to minister to our body, soul, and spirit. It's a way of simply being with God. Shifting from performing tasks and activities to just being still is beautifully therapeutic and restorative for the soul.

Here's How

Consider the time of day or night that you can just be still.

Find a peaceful place and settle in.

Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Inhale through your nose to the count of four, hold your breath to the count of seven (if you can) exhale slowly through your mouth to the count of eight (if you can).

Notice your thoughts without judging yourself for having them.

Notice if you're distracted by the cares of the day, work, family, or health concerns.

Spend some time reflecting and tracing the origins of any thought patterns.

Notice the emotions attached to any distractions you're experiencing.

Notice how your body feels. Is your chest tight or are your jaws clenched? Are you hot or cold?

Now that you've acknowledged and honored those parts of your life, turn your attention to the present moment. Tune in to God's presence. Invite him into your thoughts and thought patterns so that He can speak to you. Watch, listen and notice the sensations as He lifts weights and burdens with His Rhema word.

This is what I call reflective mindfulness. When I introduce this to my clients, these wrong beliefs, thought patterns, and burdens become separated from them. It creates room for a new perspective. One that is more in line with God's heart and truth.

Integrating a reflective practice into coaching doubles the support. It allows for healing and wholeness to flow versus being tired, stressed, and reactive.
